What happens when the wind blows off your hat, and you chase it along the beach? This sweet, short little book has only one word (and that comes on the very last page), but it still manages to tell an imaginative story!

There are only a few pages to the book, and it has a small format, but there is something charming about the tale being told. A man is walking along the beach when his hat is blown off in the wind. He sets out to chase it, but is then lifted into the air by the wind, higher and higher, over the sea, over fields, and then he realises that he's flying. Just as he begins to enjoy himself he is back over the beach and comes down to the sand with a bump, right next to his hat! The final scene sees our man standing on top of an old wooden box, looking into the wind and saying 'Again'!

The concept of 'again' is one that will be familiar to all parents and carers of small children, and the story certainly charmed my little girl. It requires a little more effort on the part of the reader, since without words you need to fill in the action of what's happening and help the child to understand the pictures. However, it's worth it as it's an enjoyable story and we read it several times over. (Again! Again!) I think the story works perfectly for adults, too, who can easily grasp the action and spend time instead enjoying the design of the illustrations. The colours are perhaps more muted than most little children are used to, but I think it's good for children to be exposed to lots of different styles of artwork rather than throwing primary coloured cartoon animals at them all the time. We certainly enjoyed looking at them, thinking together about what was happening and how the man was feeling.

It's a humorous book; seeing the man chase after his hat, imagining his shock at flying up in the air and his final longing request to do it again. Being only a very little story I shall make this just a short review...it's great - read it!

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.

Further reading suggestion: Another story of few words that we love is Chick by Ed Vere.
