Mixed Up Nursery Rhymes by Hilary Robinson and Liz Pichon

Many children have a great fondness for traditional nursery rhymes and it doesn't take long for them to know them so well that they can join in as you are reading to them. They know that Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard and that Dr Foster went to Gloucester. However, what fun it might be to sometimes mix up these tales so that the rhymes become even stranger and funnier than the originals.

Summary: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. or did they? Perhaps they sat in a corner eating a Christmas pie and pulled out a spider! You might think that you know these nursery rhymes like the back of your hand, but you might be surprised when you read some of the stories that can occur when you mix up your traditional favourites in this fabulously funny book.

This is just what children are able to do what they read Mixed Up Nursery Rhymes which has the potential for creating many variations on just a few traditional rhymes. In fact the entire book is based on twelve nursery rhymes that can be mixed up in so many ways due to the split pages on which they are written and illustrated.

This lovely spiral bound book is a sheer delight. There are wonderful, colourful illustrations that match each of the sections of the rhymes. The pages are easy to turn and it's both fascinating and funny to see the different, curious rhymes that can be created. It is only the first lines of the rhymes that are able to be mixed but it seems very clever how all of the combinations work grammatically.

The pages are reasonably sturdy but I can imagine that this book will be so loved and used that they might become a little tatty. However, a small number of tattered pages will be a small price to pay for hours of enjoyment and giggles.

The correct first verses of all twelve rhymes are written up inside the front and back covers just in case you want to remind yourself of the originals. I would also recommend that this book will be most enjoyed by children who already know nursery rhymes well as they will be able to appreciate how they have been manipulated. I will just finish with a couple of our favourite new rhymes:

Little Miss Muffet
Ran through the town with
A cup of tea,

and also:

The crooked man
Made some tarts that were stolen by
A pony.

This book is very amusing and I'm sure that it will be enjoyed by children and their parents many times over.
