A very attractive blond woman was stabbed to death whilst jogging one night in a park in Malmo. The first problem for the Criminal Investigation Squad was to establish exactly who she was - and that wasn't simple, but eventually they discovered that she had flown in from Switzerland and had links to prominent members of the Malmo community. Meanwhile Inspector Anita Sundstrom was spending her summer leave at a rented cottage in Skane and enjoying showing DS Kevin Ash, from Cumbria, the sights of the local area. Well, Kevin Ash was enjoying seeing the sights, but Anita wasn't enjoying the history lessons which went with the excursions quite so much!

Their holiday was interrupted by the death of a retired diplomat who lived in the next cottage. It could have been suicide as he was suffering from terminal cancer, but those closest to him can't believe that it was. After a further death Anita inveigles Kevin into their unofficially investigating a case which has its roots back in 1917 when the diplomat's father saved Stalin's life. Sundstrom and Ash find themselves playing cat and mouse with someone who is watching them in Berlin.

Over the series I've grown quite attached to Anita Sundstrom with her rather unconventional attachment to British men, which can't make her - or their - life any easier. This time Sundstrom isn't involved in the case of the murdered jogger and the Criminal Investigation Squad seem to get on perfectly well without her - in fact it was rather good to see some of the other characters come to the forefront. The man in charge - Moberg came across as more human when Sundstrom wasn't there to needle him and Hakim - the newest member of the squad shows great promise as a character.

I've read the three earlier books in the series from the review copies I was sent, but as I didn't get one this time I decided that I would treat myself to an audio download narrated by Marguerite Gavin and I'm afraid that I wasn't entirely impressed. Torquil MacLeod has a habit of loading the text with descriptions and for some reason this seemed more noticeable when the text is spoken. As far as the actual narrator was concerned I wasn't impressed by the range of male voices. Kevin Ash is supposed to have an Essex accent but his 'voice' was anything but - and every time he referred to his Cumbrian hometown of Penreeeth I wanted to scream. For once I was actually pleased when the audiobook finished!

The Anita Sundstrom series is anything but spoiler free and whilst you could read the individual books as stand alones you'll spoil your enjoyment of earlier books if you read them out of order. You'll find the list here:
