I was really intrigued by the title of therapist Glenn Harrold's book Look Young and Live Longer. Could it be possible that a book could deliver on such a huge promise? Having been feeling more than a little jaded lately, I was willing to give it a try.

Glenn Harrold is a clinically trained hypnotherapist although this was not always case. In the introduction he talks very candidly about his younger days when, as a musician, he made some very unhealthy life choices. He goes on to discuss how he turned his life around through hypnotherapy and went on to train in this field so that he could help others. I liked the way that he was so open about events in his life and found myself warming to the man before I had even started reading about the programme.

Through this book we're reminded that there are many contributing factors to looking younger and living longer. Each of these – healthy eating and hydration, exercise and fitness, positive mental attitude and sleep - are given their own chapter and each is described as an individual step. None of these come as any surprise but it is useful to be reminded of these aspects of life and to reflect on how well one is doing in these areas. There are also some less important factors covered such as financial security and career contentment, relationships and spiritual well being.

As you would expect, Glenn Harrold uses extremely positive language as he writes about all of these important aspects of life. He also offers some very practical common sense solutions for those who might lack willpower to really look after themselves. Each chapter is made up of facts and techniques, case studies and golden rules. This mixture is very helpful and also makes the book very easy to read.

Harrold talks much about positive thinking and visualisation which he suggests are key techniques to achieving your goals. You have to be able to see your future self in order to embark on the journey to get there. Accompanying the book is also a CD with a thirty minute hypnotherapy session. This is intended to guide you into a deep state of physical and mental relaxation which will make you more receptive to the suggestions made. To start with, it is suggested that you listen to the track every day.

I did think that this was an extremely thought provoking book although I am not sure that I was the right audience. I already have a reasonably healthy diet and have been successful in losing the excess pounds I needed to. I also have a love of exercise and it's very rare that I find myself going to bed after midnight. Therefore many of the suggestions made in the book did not apply to me. I do very much enjoy the hypnotherapy sessions though purely for the sense of relaxation and well being that they provide.

In some ways, I find this book frustrating because it seems to cover too much. I feel, that if you know you need to make vital changes in any of the ares covered, it might be best to find a book that focuses on one thing only or you might just want to dip into the relevant chapters. However, if you are overweight, drink, smoke, never exercise, never get to sleep until the early hours and really don't feel in control of your life, then this book could be just the thing you need to think about starting to make changes in your life.

So I guess the big questions are 'am I looking younger?' and 'am I going to live longer?' I don't really think that I am looking any younger but having read this book I have come to realise that I probably wasn't looking as old as I thought anyway. I guess I will never really know the answer to the second question although I am much more aware of all the things that I need to keep an eye on in my life!

If this book interests you but you have a particular desire to lose weight, take a look at You Can Think Yourself Thin by Ursula James or You Can Be Thin: The Ultimate Programme to End Dieting... Forever by Marisa Peer.
