Summary: My daughters have always loved the Little Princess stories that are written and illustrated so perfectly by Tony Ross. Even as they grow older, the popularity of this unusual quirky princess does not seem to wane at all, and so it was with delight that we all read 'I Want a Party!' in which the little princess decides that she wants to hold a party regardless of the fact that there is no occasion to celebrate. She sets about, with her usual determination, to organise everything but will it be the party that she hopes for? What could possibly go wrong?

The Little Princes is quite a famous character among young children having starred in many stories as well as her own TV series. In her latest book, 'I Want a Party!', she is set on having a do even though there is nothing to actually celebrate. And of course, if you are familiar with this series of books, you will know that what the little princess wants, she usually gets. Having brushed aside her parents' objections, she sets about writing invitations, preparing party food with the Cook, making party hats with the Prime Minister and planning games with the General.

Soon the day of the party arrives and the Maid helps the princess into her favourite dress and best crown. She is very excited but soon realises that although everything is ready, there are no guests. She has forgotten to send out the invitations! The little princess is extremely sad but there is suddenly a knock at the door. It's her best friend delivering invitations for her party the following week. The princess invites her in and soon realises that you can have a brilliant party with only one guest as well as with many!

I Want a Party is a very entertaining and endearing book. My daughters love the Little Princess and adore her forthright personality and honest opinions. She could appear to be a bit spoilt but isn't – she is just incredibly funny. As well as the story being amusing, much of the humour comes through in the fabulous illustrations. Tony Ross has a way of depicting characters as both appealing and grotesque at the same time. All of the characters seem to have big boggly eyes and ruddy cheeks. They are also depicted doing very normal things such as the King, on his hands and knees but still wearing his crown, planting seedlings in the palace gardens.

I Want a Party is very easy and enjoyable to read. It is a great one to share with younger children. Slightly older ones are very likely to be able to read it by themselves quite successfully due to the accessible language, low number of words on any page and the familiar characters and story lines.

Overall, we love this book. It is a funny story with very entertaining illustrations as well as a fabulous quirky main character. Like many of the other books in the series, it is likely to be read time and again in our house.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.

If this book is likely to appeal to your child, there are many other Little Princess books such as I Want my Tooth or I Want a Sister. Equally, you might want to take a look at another hilarious Tony Ross book, Don't Do That!
