Summary: A perfect introduction to the alphabet. The always-excellent Kipper takes us through the alphabet with an engaging and involving story, meaning that young book fans will want to read it and re-read it with you. The letters will gradually soak in, and before you know it, they'll be reading it TO you. Highly recommended.

Kipper and his friend Arnold work their way through the alphabet, from the ant that Arnold finds, all the way through to the zebra, who keeps asking if it's his turn yet. I shall leave you the fun of discovering for yourself what they do with X!

Everyone loves Mick Inkpen's Kipper books, and rightly so. They're engaging, enjoyable, charming, delightful, just plain loveable. Kipper's A To Z is no exception. Rather than just listing words that match the letters, there's a real story here, with a strong cast of characters, an involving plot, and plenty of jokes to keep everyone smiling. In doing all that, it becomes the perfect book to help young children learn their alphabet. If you tell someone to memorise 26 things that are new to them, of course they won't be able to. Engage them and show them those things in action, and they'll soak it up. Maybe they'll remember 'their' letter from their name, maybe it'll be the K for Kipper, or maybe it'll be their favourite animal's letter. Whichever letters they start to pick up, they have the best possible chance to learn with a book like this.

The illustrations are, as always, fantastic. Each page may appear deceptively simple, but there is still plenty going on. Kipper, Arnold and the zebra may only have two dots for eyes, but there are plenty of different expressions showing up throughout the alphabet. You'd love to be Kipper's pal and hang out with him - he looks like lots of fun.

Kipper's A To Z should find its way to every child's bookshelf. It's educational, but in the best possible way, and without losing sight of how enjoyable books should always be. Mick Inkpen's wish for his books to become dog-eared and familiar is one that any child will be delighted to help make come true. Highly recommended.

Thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Older book fans will love The Dangerous Alphabet by Neil Gaiman and Gris Grimly and Abc 3d by Marion Bataille. Those young readers looking to learn numbers, rather than the alphabet, won't go far wrong with The Selfish Crocodile Counting Book by Faustin Charles and Michael Terry.
