It's bedtime in the jungle, and one by one the animal families are going to sleep. First the rhino and her one child, then the monkey and her two, and so on up to ten. It's a great introduction to counting, as well as various jungle animals.

There may be many counting books out there, but It Was Bedtime In The Jungle is a fine addition to them. There is an interesting choice of animals - most familiar, but some like peahens that will be new to most children. There's a great sense of rhyme and rhythm throughout, which encourages young children to join in. It doesn't hammer home the numbers, but with repeated reads they will become more and more familiar.

John Butler's illustrations are beautiful, particularly with furry animals like the tigers pictured on the cover. The backgrounds are equally luxurious and detailed. The style is almost too cute for the likes of the crocodiles and elephants... perhaps gentle is a better word than cute. You'd be hard pushed to get through the book without saying awwww a couple of times.

The sedate pace, gentle illustrations and subject matter makes it perfect for bedtime reading. It's the sort of book that grandparents will particularly love reading with their loved ones. Recommended.

Thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

What's in the Fridge? by Gaby Goldsack and Jo Moon is another great counting book - children love it, but parents can find the pieces a bit fiddly to put away. The Selfish Crocodile Counting Book by Faustin Charles and Michael Terry is also well worth a look.
