Some books seem determined to put you off. Unless it's literary fiction Going Mental suggests something that I've gone to great lengths to avoid. The man on the cover is bald, bloodied and apparently screaming. I've been avoiding men like that too. …not for the soft and sensitive! it says and whilst I wouldn't describe myself as either I do wonder whether allowing Jakob Lovstad to mess with my head is the wisest thing I've ever done. When I realise that he's a cage fighter I'm ready to run. What has that got to do with my business? Because that's what this book is about – reaching your goals in business and sports.
Then I start reading. The language is, er, blunt and probably not at all unusual in the locker room. Your maiden aunt might not understand some of it – or would prefer that you thought she didn't. Don't worry though – difficult words (such as asshole) are explained and usually in a way that will stick in the mind. You're about to get a blunt and energetic wake-up call to sort yourself out. And you're going to get help and clear explanations as to how you should do it. You even get warnings if you're moving into an area which could cause you problems.
At first I couldn't see any links between the way our business is run and cage fighting but it's all about getting yourself into prime mental state to do what you're going to do. It's full of suggestions to help you achieve your best, which might seem strange at first glance, but bear thinking about. If you've got something scarier coming up, do something scarier for fun the day before and the high of success will carry you through. I'm not going to detail Jakob's methods – I've neither his expertise nor his way with words – but if someone who is about as far from cage fighting as it's possible to get can see the sense in them then they're worth considering.
I looked at the book from the point of view of running a business but the skills you'll learn are readily transferrable to just about any sport or, as Jakob keeps stressing, the art of seduction. I read through the book and was thinking about the review I was going to write when I decided that I would go back and work my way through it, doing the work that Jakob suggests. There were areas that were painful and some where the roots of problems were so deeply buried that I suspect I haven't yet unearthed them, but I was surprised by how relaxed I felt about some subjects afterwards. The book doesn't work miracles – you'll have to do that – but if you're prepared to invest some effort then you'll be rewarded.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
