It's bedtime on Cluck-A-Moodle Farm, but five naughty sheep won't go to sleep. One by one, mummy gets them to sleep until peace finally descends. ...Or does it?

Go To Sleep, Sheep! is an enjoyable little pop-up book. The sheep are playful, rather than outright naughty, and they've turned going to bed into a jolly romp. You might not want your little ones to be having pillow fights when they should be sleeping, but they will enjoy laughing at the sheep doing what they shouldn't. Counting down from five to zero is in the vein of rhymes like 'five in the bed', but you can also count as one by one there's another sleeping sheep. If you're feeling really righteous, you can even sow a few early seeds of arithmetic.

Melanie Williamson's illustrations are wonderful. They have a vibrant and unique style that I love. It lends itself perfectly to the cheekiness of the sheep, the yawning frustration of their mummy, and the sweetness when they're all finally tucked up in bed together.

I wasn't blown away by the pop-ups. Any page that pops up is always guaranteed to be popular with children, but apart from the pillow-fight, each page seemed a bit too similar to the last. Of course, any book with five sheep is always going to be a bit samey, but I'd have liked something a bit more different. What is different is the model of a sheep tucked into a pocket on the last page. I struggled a bit to get it to pop up at first, as it was a bit stiff, but it's worked perfectly every time since then. It's a bit fiddly to put it back down again, but it's a nice little bonus at the end and is very well made.

All in all, Go To Sleep, Sheep! is lots of fun, and will be enjoyed by young book fans. Thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Zoom and Fly, Mr Croc by Jo Lodge is an excellent pop-up book that's perfect for sharing with little ones, as is Chick by Ed Vere. If sheep are your thing, then Marvin Gets MAD! by Joseph Theobald is lots of fun. We've also enjoyed Amber by Julie Sykes.
