Max Walburt has a real problem with his teacher and nothing seems to make it better. Running for class president seems like a good way out of his problems but inevitably it doesn't run smoothly.

I don't care if a book is aimed at toddlers or adults it should still be entertaining. I think back to reading books to my kids when they were much younger – some books were dire but the good ones stuck with me and in sparse few words provided as much enjoyment for me as them. This book does that.

I've not read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books (although I had to sit through the latest National Lampoons: Summer Vacation film that inexplicably was named after the book series) but this is exactly what I expect them to be like – irreverent, funny and entertaining.

Stanton is no Watterson but there is definitely a strong (but not in your face) relationship and influence from Calvin and Hobbes throughout that works well.

The mixing of cartoon images with the text is handled brilliantly and really enhances the story experience.

We have poop, spew, a presidential race filled with controversy and a duck – what more do you want? The whole politics side of things is handled extremely well and introduces children to the concept of the media having a narrative very well.

Will Max make president? Will he be welcomed as the Funny Kid? Will the duck peck his ankles? Will you buy this book for your kids? I will only answer the last question to say – you bloody-well should!
