Elmer the patchwork elephant is back... umm... Again. Everything is gearing up for the annual Elmer's Day Parade, where the other elephants paint themselves brightly and he paints himself grey. Being a bit of a scamp, he decides that things need to be livened up, so he plots and plans, then sets about putting a smile on everyone's faces.

As with the other Elmer books, Elmer Again is a fun little tale of a sweet, cheeky and playful elephant. The stories are much-loved classics for a reason, and this ticks all the right boxes as usual. There's a direct and engaging plot, simple yet enticing writing, and the familiar bright and happy illustrations.

If forced to choose a favourite from the Elmer books Bookbag has reviewed so far, I'd plump for Elmer On Stilts - the plot is just that little bit more exciting. That said, committed Elmer fans will like Elmer Again's reference to the annual parade from the original book. You don't need to know the original to enjoy this story, but building a cohesive world makes it even more satisfying. Thankfully, there's no feeling that you have to buy every single book to enjoy any of them. Whilst they sit comfortably together on the bookshelf, each works well in its own right. The quality is always high, and it never feels like a cheap cash-in.

It's easy to take well-known books for granted, but Elmer Again is a lovely picture book that will be enjoyed by all young book fans. It's another Elmer book. You'll love it. What more really is there to say? Warmly recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.

Like Elmer Again, Big Bad Bun by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross features a practical joke, albeit from a rabbit, rather than an elephant. If it's elephants you want, check out Arthur and the Meanies by Jan Fearnley. If you're on a classics kick, you'll love The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr Benn by David McKee and Mr Nobody (Mr Men and Little Misses) by Roger Hargreaves. Would you like to see more of Elmer?
