Summary: Join Dr Xargle as he teaches his class of aliens all about Earth Tiggers, or as we like to call them, cats. This very funny book is full of hilarious observations and will provide many a giggle for children and adults alike.

We have met Dr Xargle before, telling his class all about 'earthlets' and 'earth hounds', so now we see him again bumbling through his lesson with highly amusing misinformation about Earth Tiggers, or cats as we like to call them. As with many books by these authors, Dr Xargle's Book of Earth Tiggers is very witty indeed. The illustrations are funny as ever and work together with the words incredibly well, as, without the correct pictures, this style of books can fly over the heads of little readers.

In terms of picture books, the format is a little old fashioned in style, having been originally published in 1990, but this doesn't matter at all. Its wit and humour carry it without needing to try and match the different layouts of a lot of modern picture books. The pictures are bright and the wording fairly simple which makes it easily accessible to all so that hopefully older and younger children will be able to read this together. For families who own cats, this will be a particularly enjoyable bedtime read and I especially loved looking at all the small details within the pictures to see what the little Tiggers are up to on each page. Though the main purpose of this book is actually the cats, the character of Dr Xargle himself is wonderful, and not scary at all given that he's an alien.

It's nice to read a slightly different style of book, not a story or a rhyme, but one about observations and witticisms with lots of things for children to spot, finding new things each time it is read, and I have no doubt it will be pawed through many times over.

From claws to fur balls and taking in a trip to the vets along the way, Dr Xargle shows us all just how Earth Tiggers rule to roost in any home. Now I'll just be off to read what other things he's got to say about the world of planet earth…

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
