In my youth colouring books were popular for children: they helped to teach some valuable skills. But teachers, 'experts', thought that they stifled creativity and once you'd mastered being able to stick within the lines they were whisked away as being 'childish' and you were restricted to artistic completion of maps in geography or illustrations of experiments in science. The fact that colouring could be relaxing and fun had been forgotten. Fortunately times have changed: adults are encouraged to relax with one of the hundreds of colouring books now available and I'm delighted to see a resurgence of the idea for not just the youngest children but for those who're a bit older too.

OK, so cool kids are not exactly going to be keen to complete artistic renditions of flowers and even dragons can feel a little stale after the umpteenth page of them. What's really going to appeal to kids is a colouring book based on a television series to which they can relate - and the Doctor has been appealing to kids for as long as I can remember.

General points about the book first. It's a paperback, so it's only really going to work on a flat surface: it's not one to take on your travels, but there are useful flaps so you can find your place quickly. The paper is sufficiently substantial that I didn't find any bleed-through to the reverse as I tackled my first dalek and there's the bonus that the reverse only has a quote (they're interesting though) so if you want to remove a page to frame, or stick to the front of the fridge, you're not losing another picture. There are forty five full-page images and quite a few small ones, so quite a bit of wall space is going to be covered. There are even a dozen things to find within the pictures as you complete them.

As for the pictures, well, there's everything there that you might expect: planets, galaxies, villains, heroes, the Doctor, the TARDIS and the time vortex. Some of the images are more intricate than others, so there's something for every skill level and they're all great good fun.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

You fans (and even those who are a little older) will enjoy Doctor Who: Time Lord Fairy Tales by Justin Richards and David Wardle. If you're looking for more colouring fun related to a popular television series we can recommend Sherlock: The Mind Palace: The Official Colouring Book by Mike Collins, but this does require a higher skill level than Doctor Who Colouring Book to be satisfying.
