Summary: A great bedtime book for children who are scared of the dark. By personifying Darkness, it makes everything much less frightening. It's a fun story in its own right too.

Daisy is playing in the evening, then Darkness slips in through the window and turns the room black. She's a clever one is our Daisy: she knows exactly what Darkness is up to, and how to stop him. She grabs him by the wrist and dances the funky twist.

Darkness Slipped In is perfect for any child having trouble sleeping, particularly if they're afraid of the dark. Darkness is a real character, rather than just general darkness; personifying the fear makes it less scary, particularly as Darkness is such fun. Having Darkness shiny on the page (spot varnish, to use the technical term) means children will love to stroke the page, again, making the fear less scary.

Ella Burfoot's illustrations are lovely. The shiny Darkness is the obvious star, but Daisy, her toy rabbit and her understated home look great too. They remind me a little of Babette Cole's work, as they've got a fresh and exciting style.

Even children who aren't scared of the dark will enjoy Darkness Slipped In - and don't worry, it won't give them any ideas to be scared. It's a fun tale, with a comic twist and a nice sense of rhyme throughout. It's great for reading before bedtime as it ends with Goodnight, but there's nothing stopping you from reading it at any time. Recommended.
