Jake's friend, Daisy, is a cow. In fact, she's a very special cow. If we were a little older than Jake we'd call her a chameleon because she's not black, or black and white, or brown. Wherever Daisy goes she can take on the colours of what's around her. So when she stands in front of the stone wall she's a mottled grey colour but when she's in the field of corn she turns golden. Funniest of all is when she stands in front Mum's washing and is the colour of the sheets which she has hung out on the line.

This is wonderful for playing hide and seek, but occasionally Jake does get frustrated when he can't find Daisy and the tears flow. Eventually he spots her in a field full of cows! It's a delightful lesson in looking beyond the obvious and looking for shapes rather than the colours you expect to see. Ellie Sandall doesn't just content herself with the obvious joke of the cow you can't quite see but she takes it a little bit further. In each of the pictures there's something to look for: Jake's toy is a wooden cow on a string and Mum is hanging out a sweater on the washing line with a cow on the front! There's plenty to see on each page and lots to discuss.

It's a gentle and fun book and even when you know where to look for Daisy it's still enjoyable because it's cleverly done. So many children's books seem designed to correct poor behaviour or to teach something that the child will find useful. This book is just pure, delightful fun and it's all the better for that.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
