Paul Hughes.JPG

Paul Hughes was born in Scotland, but moved to London, England in nineteen sixty-six.

He came to London with a so called ‘Beat Group’ named 1-2-3, which included his brother Harry on drums. The group were signed up to Brian Epstein and his world famous NEMS Agency. At the time there were four groups in the NEMS agency; 'The Beatles,’ ‘Cream,’ ‘The Bee Gees’ and ‘1-2-3’ - Guess who did not make the big time? For 1-2-3 there was a residency in the world famous 'Marquee' Club, where they met David Bowie who was a big fan and they played on Davids’ first demo discs. In fact all these years later they were mentioned in Davids’ autobiography just before he died. There was a famous gig in 1967 at ‘The Savile’ theatre in London supporting Jimi Hendrix and later they had jam sessions with Jimi Hendrix and Eric Burdon of 'The Animals' fame at 'The Speakeasy etc. The group later became ‘Clouds’ and as recording artistes with Chrysalis toured the world with ‘Jethro Tull’ and ‘Ten Years After.’ They played in many other iconic venues including; ‘The Hollywood Bowl,’ ‘The Whiskey a Go Go,’ and The Troubadour’

Paul used all of these events and his personal experiences in the sixties as background material for the Series of DI Spearing and DI Devlin books, starting with ‘Beginning to End,’ the current release ‘Running Amok,’ which is Book 2 in the series and Book 3 in the series titled ‘Revenge is Mine’ (due for release in November 2018).

The book series is set in 'swinging' London during the 1960’s a time when, as the old song said; "Anything Goes.'’ - For some, the nineteen-sixties in ‘swinging’ London, England were their halcyon days, a wild and wonderful long party time. For so many others it was no more than an era of depravity with; murders, rapes of both girls and boys, assassinations, suicides, overdosing on drugs or booze and corruption in every walk of life.

No area was left untainted, from the so-called UK Establishment, including the Upper Classes, Politicians, the Police, MI5 and MI6. Then there were the avant-garde people; actors, poets, painters, the sixties so called ‘Beat Groups’ and the Disc Jockeys. It went all the way down through the middle and lower working classes. Paul also had a few friends who worked in the iconic New Scotland Yard and they gave him a lot the background, so the series was born looking at the wild and crazy 1960’s as seen through the eyes of two New Scotland Yard Detectives Spearing and Devlin and an assassin known as ‘The Fox.’

THE DIFFERENCE WITH THIS SERIES OF BOOKS IS THE STORIES ARE LOOSELY BASED, WITH SOME AUTHORS LICENCE, ON ACTUAL EVENTS, BUT INCLUDES LOTS OF HUMOUR WHICH OFFSETS THE DARKER MOMENTS.

Paul now lives in Northampton England, but these days he does most of his writing out in Asia during the UK winters.
