Since we have worn our copy of Busiest People Ever almost to shreds it was with great delight that we sat down to take a look at this book all about Lowly Worm. Lowly Worm is already a well known character in our house, and so there's something delightful in having a whole book about him! And what a book! This has a little bit of everything in, from the Lowly Worm alphabet right at the start, through counting and what it's like at school, to a delightful chapter all about good manners and on to the never-ending fun of playing 'where's Lowly Worm'. It's possible this will become our new favourite bedtime read!

Lowly Worm, for those not in the know, is a small worm who wears a Tyrolean hat, lives with a family of cats, and is able to drive a wide range of vehicles! If you haven't met him before you needn't worry because this book tells you everything about him that you could possibly need to know. There's a page labelling his body parts and bits of clothing (I laughed out loud when I saw that he only has one underpant because of course he doesn't have 2 legs! We see Lowly at home with the cat family, doing his chores and getting ready for school, and we also see him taking part in various school day activities.

My favourite section is called Lowly's Good Manners and, given the option, I'd make it compulsory reading for all toddlers! It's full of helpful statements such as I don't interrupt when others are talking and I always take my turn. With my small stubborn two year old I'm already planning to magically turn to this page very often! But, of course, although there are lots of things to learn from the book, it doesn't ever feel preachy, or as if you are learning, because all of the pictures are so much fun! It's ridiculous that a worm is walking across a road, or driving an apple car - he only has one foot! But your mind plays the trick that makes everything seem completely normal, and you merely find yourself enjoying the wide ranging vehicles that Lowly is able to manage (even though he's apparently school-age!)

After the manners pages, my other favourite part is the Where's Lowly? section, which sees us hunting for Lowly in lots of small scenes, trying to spot his foot, or hat, or nose. We thoroughly enjoy this kind of thing, and I even found a couple of the pictures to be tricky enough to see me thinking 'well, where IS Lowly!' There are lots and lots of different vehicles, and lots of different characters, and you could easily have this as a book you dip in and out of, or else it becomes the book you try to hide from your toddler at bedtime because you know it will take half an hour to do every single page in all its glorious detail! Wonderful stuff - Scarry at his best!
