A book jumps off the bookshelf and shows a couple of babies just how wonderful reading can be. They learn about all the places you can read and with whom you can read. By the end they'll discover what we all know: that books are to be cherished and that reading is something to be appreciated forever.

Babies Love Books is an excellent introduction to books for very young children. It's a very simple tale, but it's bristling with character. The rhymes flow perfectly throughout - they feel natural, rather than forced as they can in some picture books. It all builds up to a nice little joke at the end, which makes it the perfect place to end bedtime reading for the night.

Catherine Anholt's illustrations are wonderfully detailed. There's so much to discover in every scene. Every page is bursting with life, making it a real joy to pore over it all. The core style is gentle, charming and sweet. It's a book for the youngest of children and it's perfectly pitched. Once children are old enough to declare that they're not babies, they'll be looking for books with a stronger central narrative. Until that time, they'll lap up Babies Love Books and make it one of the first books that they love.

Catherine and Laurence Anholt also have a website at Anholt.co.uk. There's plenty for children to discover, including video and audio stories, games, and the opportunity to win books. It's lots of fun.

My thanks to the publishers for sending Babies Love Books to Bookbag.

Little Bo Peep's Troublesome Sheep by Cressida Cowell mixes a familiar nursery rhyme with a love of library books. Young readers will also enjoy A Very Curious Bear by Tony Mitton and Paul Howard, which shows some of the many answers that can be provided by books.
