If Prince Harry has taught us anything, it is that royal offspring need to spread their wings and see the world. And royal elephants are no exception. Isabelle, King Babar's youngest daughter, is off to Paris, and before she goes her father has some wonderful advice for her about what to see and do in the French capital.

This being France, we start with food. Elephants need to eat too, you know. So we learn about the best cafés and the nicest brasseries. Next Babar tells Isabelle about how sometimes it rains in Paris. He's being kind. Every single time I have been there it rains, and so I know, like Isabelle now knows, that she should take a warm jacket, and an umbrella too. What else is typically French, or indeed Parisienne? How about tiny lifts, though being an American-French elephant, his Royal Highness calls them elevators. Or museums, the opera and the Eiffel Tower. If she wants to enjoy the great outdoors there are parks, palaces and of course the river. There is just so much to experience.

This is a beautifully imagined book complemented with traditional and familiar artwork. Paris doesn't just come to life, it jumps off the pages. No detail is overlooked, and with the exception of the passers by on the street (people are out, elephants are in) this is a very real representation of a city I know so well.

Babar's Guide To Paris is a precious book to read alone or to read together. It is a lovely, gentle introduction to life in other parts, and whether your destination is Paris, somewhere else in France or further afield, it provides welcoming starting blocks for discussion how things are different, yet wonderfully so, when you visit other countries.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending us this superb book. It really is one to treasure.

If Paris is your destination, or just the happy place in your heart, A Walk In Paris by Salvatore Rubbino is also highly recommended.
