Summary: If you have a child who is going to hospital as a patient or a visitor then this book is perfect. You don't? Ok - it's also a wonderful bedtime story and do you know a child who doesn't like playing doctors and nurses? Highly recommended.

It is going to be a very busy day for the animal doctors. There's a snake that needs unknotting, a leopard who has lost his spots and the inevitable dog who has swallowed an alarm clock. But today is going to be an important day for Terence too as he's going to be a doctor – just like his Mummy, who is a doctor every day. Terence packs his first aid kit (some VERY useful toys in there!) and off he goes to the hospital with Mummy.

It's when you see the picture of the hospital that you realise that you've got a very special book. I've seen grown men drooling over the picture and occasionally pointing out something that makes them laugh. There's every part of the hospital there and you can lose yourself in the picture for ages. Particular favourites are the Physiotherapy department and Maternity, but there's everything there from the children's ward (lots of pillow fighting going on there) to the Old Animals' Ward where a quiet snooze and a read of the paper are the order of the day. You're bound to find something of interest and it did strike me that if I had a child who had to visit hospital – either as a patient or a visitor – then this would be the ideal book to introduce them to the idea in a non-threatening way.

Once we're inside the hospital we see the individual animals being treated and some of the things which doctors and nurses use to treat them – including the perfect cure-all: a nice cup of tea. Nurse Glenda the chimp helps a dog who has managed to get his head stuck in a pan and giraffe, who cricked his neck looking round a sharp corner, had to have his head out of the ambulance window because he was so tall!

The story is written and illustrated by Sharon Rentta, whom we met recently when she did the illustrations for One Dog and His Boy written by Eva Ibbotson. It's brilliant if you're on your way to hospital but it also makes an excellent bedtime story as Terence winds down after his long and tiring day – and have you ever met a child who doesn't enjoy playing doctors and nurses?

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

Children who are a little older will also enjoy Claude in the City by Alex T Smith.
