|summary=Find the hidden animals in the rainforest by shining a light through the pages.
}}
The rainforest is bustling with life. If we look closely, we will be able to spot the animals living there. Some are hiding in the trees, some under leaves or behind rocks. There are plenty of secrets to discover. And to become a special rainforest explorer, you will need a torch, or a bright light, because that is the key to spotting all of those hidden creatures...

''Secrets of the Rainforest'' uses a very simple technique to bring a little 'magic' to its pages. The back of each page is almost blacked out, apart from a small white image of an animal. When the reader shines a torch through the page, or holds it up to the light, the animal 'shines through' and comes out of hiding. This is such a clever idea and children will love exploring the rainforest and searching for the hidden animals.

There are a couple of sentences of easy-to-read text on each page, to encourage emerging readers to try it out for themselves. The book is also a great teaching aid, as it helps children to familiarise themselves with the many different creatures that live in the forest, including the hummingbird, sloth, river dolphin and salamander. Arachnophobes be warned: there is a big spider hiding inside the book too!

At the very back of the book, there is a double page spread looking at the different habitats in the rainforest and the animals that live there. In simple terms, it discusses the canopy and different tree levels, as well as mentioning a few of the different types of plant that live on the forest floor.

''Secrets of the Rainforest'' is a beautifully illustrated book and the 'Shine a Light' feature makes it even more appealing. The book helps children to understand the importance of this dwindling habitat from an early age. I hope that there will be more 'Shine a Light' books in the series.

Many thanks to the publishers for my review copy. The book is by Ivy Press who produce consistently high quality publications and offer something a little different from the norm. They never fail to delight and surprise me with their innovative books.

If you enjoyed this book, try [[One Night, Far From Here by Julia Wauters]], which uses transparent pages to bring the forest to life.
