A dragon storms into a baby's bedroom, snorting silver sparks and farting purple smoke. He roars and demands the baby hand over all his treasure. The baby, being just a baby, simply giggles. Jan Fearnley's wonderful picture book sees the dragon try all he can to get the baby to give up his riches.
What a fun book! Children will love the stomping dragon's fierce mood being undermined by the baby's innocent smiles. They'll snicker at the dragon's comeuppance when he's left holding a dirty nappy (This certainly isn't treasure!) They'll be charmed by the gentle twist at the end, where the dragon discovers what true treasure is. It'll be an immediate favourite.
Fearnley's illustrations blend perfectly with her text. They're bold, bright, gloriously colourful, and are well worth lingering over to fully savour. See if you can spot the toy mouse who quietly joins in the adventure too! If you'd like to see examples of her illustration style, you can check out her website at Hungry-Wolf.com.
The Baby Dragon-Tamer is perfect for reading together. It's bristling with fun, love, humour, adventure and charm. Recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
A Hero's Birthday by Emma Chichester-Clark is another lovely look at friendship. If you fancy dinosaurs in your picture books, rather than dragons, then you'll enjoy Baby Blue Egg by Mij Kelly and Mary McQuillan.
The Baby Dragon-Tamer by Jan Fearnley is in the Top Ten Books For Children Who Think That Farts Are Funny.
