Bertie is a creature of habit. Every day is predictable but Bertie likes the certainty of the routine. I know how he feels. One day, though, something happens. He oversleeps and when he wakes up the others are gone and he is all alone. Although he still ventures out, he gets a little lost and is soon quite upset. Enter Blue who is just like him but oh so different too.

''Bertie and Blue'' is a book about valuing differences, making friends and all those other staples of children's stories. It's a teensy bit sweet for an adult reader, but the children love it and don't pick up on the clichés.

The real selling point for this book is the pictures. It is so beautifully illustrated, and I loved the way the landscape changed once Blue came on board. The tropical feel is there from the very beginning and you can almost feel the sounds of nature coming off the page. The sounds also come through from the words as we learn that the giraffes spend their day ''crunching'' and ''slurping'' and all sorts of other fun things.

I enjoyed this story even though it was incredibly predictable and a story that seems familiar to regular readers of books for this age group, even if it's not been done with a blue giraffe before. I'd like to thank the publishers for sending us a copy to review. It's cute, and cute is always good.
