''Babies'' takes a fresh look at the over-explored subject of young animals, large and small. Written and illustrated with the pre-school toddler in mind, the colours are bright and attention-grabbing; the pictures big and clear enough for even smaller children to appreciate and with lift-up flaps to add an extra frisson of surprise. The book takes an affectionate but not twee look at the animals and tells something about the species and its habitat without ever appearing to try and teach. There is an educational element - but the emphasis is on fun and enjoyment.
The lift-up flaps (so often a weak point) weren't tested to destruction but were sturdy enough to withstand the explorations of my ten-month -old daughter. Even she was attracted by the gorgeous illustrations but I think that it's a book to put away until she's a year or so older when I'm sure that this will be a favourite bedtime read.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
Younger children will love [[Peepo Paw Prints by Smriti Prasadam and Melanie Mitchell]] and [[What's That Noise Mr Croc? by Jo Lodge]], where the pop -ups and tabs are magical. Slightly older children will appreciate [[Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell]]. You might also enjoy [[Babies Don't Bite by David Bedford and Tor Freeman]].
