A young owl decides to stay awake during the day, to see what the world is like. She's amazed by all the colours that wash over the Earth and shine in the sky.
Wow! Said The Owl is a lovely introduction to colours, with each pair of pages dedicated to a different colour - the pink dawn sky, green leaves, red butterflies and so on. Many books cover colours, but none with quite as much charm as this. Tim Hopgood's collage-style illustrations are reminiscent of the kind of children's books I remember when I was younger, but it all feels fresh and contemporary. If the field of orange flowers doesn't make your heart soar, there's something wrong with you!
Many books focussing on colours (or numbers, alphabet or anything else educational) tend to forget the core story, but Wow! Said The Owl flows beautifully. This, of course, means that children will want to read and re-read it. They'll absorb the different colours, rather than have them forced down their throat once and forgotten about. It's a fine addition to any young child's bookshelf.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
Kipper's A To Z by Mick Inkpen has a perfect blend of educational and interesting. Ten Friendly Frogs by Sally Hobson is a fun counting book, complete with plastic frogs and a button to make croaking noises.
