When we last met Worzel Woolface he was a rather frightened dog who had difficulty meeting people. He's a bit better now and something which he really enjoys is going for a walk. It's not just a case of attaching a lead and heading for your favourite spot - there are a lot of other things to think about first.

Even when it's cold Worzel loves to go to the beach and today we're going along with him. First we've got to get Worzel's lead, lots of treats and some bags. Oh, and please don't forget the ball either! In winter the beach is quiet - just seagulls and dogs having fun - and Worzel can paddle, dance, splash in the sea, jump over the waves and race on the sand. We'll have to remember that when he's wet he'll give himself a good shake, so people need to watch where they stand.

Worzel's a regular on the beach and some of the other dogs are his friends and they love to play together. There are other dogs though who might be older, worried or scared and they'd prefer that Worzel and his friends played further away. Worzel understands this. He also stays close by us if a dog on a lead comes along. It's not fair just to rush up. Something else we have to be careful about is cleaning up after Worzel - that's why we brought the bags along. It's not pleasant to do but it keeps the beach (or wherever else we might walk) clean for everyone else. It also means that people don't object to dogs quite so much if there isn't evidence that they've passed this way!

On the way home Worzel is covered in sand from the beach (or it might be mud from the fields or water from the river) so we have to be careful about who we say hello to. Back home after a quick clean up we can all rest in front of the fire and plan our next outing.

Oh, I loved this book. It captures Worzel so perfectly, but most importantly gives children (and adults too, for that matter) the feeling that they'll be able to take their dog out and that they'll all act responsibly. It isn't difficult - and Catherine Pickles conveys that well. The book's gently educational, but it's done very gently without even the merest hint of being patronising. It's beautifully written and the illustrations complement to text so well.

Dogs and dog owners can get a bad name and it's up to dog owners to ensure that they and their charges act responsibly: if they do most non-owners will be accepting and understanding. This book can really help both adults and children to achieve that.

(My husband has just had a look at the book, thought that it was a lot of fun and commented about how reasonable the cover price is for a hardback book.)

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy of the book to the Bookbag.

If you haven't read Worzel says hello! Will you be my friend? you really should.
