Summary: This funny little flipover book provides two great stories for children who are just becoming fluent readers. Winnie the Witch gets into bother when she enters her cat Wilbur in the Witches' Cat Show before causing mayhem on World Book Day. Yuck is a mischievous boy who can only manage to be good by playing tricks. These short reads have been especially written for World Book Day and should certainly encourage children to want to read.

My daughter was very confused when I first showed her our new book. Looking at in one way we were about to read Winnie to the Rescue! but when she turned it over there was an entirely different story called Yuck. When she realised that we were actually getting two stories in one with this special World Book Day flipover book, she was very pleased.

We read Winnie to the Rescue! first, as Winnie is one of her favourite characters from numerous picture story books. In this book, Winnie has a couple of adventures. Firstly, she enters her cat Wilbur into the Witches' Cat show. The only problem is that Wilbur has fleas and it does not take long before he is not the only cat scratching. After this, Winnie is feeling bored on World Book Day so she visits the local library with Wilbur. Sadly, Winnie is unable to read and when she sees everyone else getting so much enjoyment from books she decides that it is time for her to go back to school. Of course, nothing is ever simple and she ends up creating chaos at the school.

Winnie is always a charming eccentric character and my daughter loves her. Just as with the other Winnie books we have read, she was soon giggling at all of Winnie's antics. She also loves the wonderful illustrations provided by Korky Paul, although she was a little disappointed because in this book, they are all in black and white.

As soon as we had finished reading about Winnie, we had to turn over and discover who Yuck was. He is a naughty little schoolboy who loves playing tricks. In this story, he and his friend Little Eric have not earned any stars on their report cards and they need ten in order to avoid being in serious trouble. This very funny story tells of their devious plan to fill their report cards with stars and cause trouble for the two best behaved girls in the school, Polly and Lucy. This was another humourous story and my daughter loved it, but I didn't feel that it was well suited to being read aloud. It is the sort of story to read on your own and quietly giggle at the silly storyline and fabulous illustrations.

Both stories are very suitable for children who are just becoming fluent readers. The language is very accessible and each story is no more than fifty pages long so ideal for children who have yet to build up their stamina for longer more complex reads. As they are so much fun, the stories are sure to motivate children to want to read them for themselves.

We love the fact that there are two books in one and my daughter thinks it's great that while we are reading one story, the other is upside down. The book is very small in size and could easily fit into a pocket or Mum's handbag, making it an ideal book to take out with you.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.

If this sounds like a good read, your child will probably also enjoy Whizz-Bang Winnie.
