Where Will I Go? is unusual. It’s a story book telling the tale of a young boy’s trip to the museum with his Dad. It’s told in rhyme and it has lots of facts about geography to share. It’s also a board book, so tough enough for toddler hands. ‘Where Will I Go?’ blends fact with fiction but, most important is it fun?

Daddy is our guide, together with his son and a friendly white dog who appears on every page. Via the rooms of the museum, we are introduced to the sights of the world from London to China via Spain and a good few more destinations. Landmarks including the leaning tower of Pisa, the Empire state building and the Great Wall of China are illustrated in charming child friendly montages. There’s a sweet ending too - wherever you may travel to… … your Daddy loves you so.

Where Will I Go? is published by Digital Leaf who specialise in combining hard copy editions with digital apps as an add on or alternative to the traditional book. The app, narrated by Brian Blessed and offering some extra features including the opportunity to interact with the characters and the chance to change the little boy to a little girl, was not included as part of this review copy. How you feel about the app is likely to be determined by how you feel about pre-schoolers' access to technology. Certainly, the book stands alone without it. Judging by the damage my toddler can inflict on a board book, I’ll be leaving the app until he’s a big bigger. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy the rhyming story and dream about trips to come.

Geography, rhyme, facts and fiction are an unusual combination in pre-school books. You will find two out of four though in the fantastic Following the Tractor by Susan Steggall.
