This title is part of a new series which develops Tony Ross's unforgettable Little Princess for older children reading on their own.
The Not So Little Princess hasn't really grown out of her teddy bear, Gilbert, but she's old enough to have become self-conscious when her friend Ollie finds her telling stories to the teddy in the garden. She denies and abandons Gilbert.
The teddy is left on his own dangling in a bush and feeling sorry for himself. Things go from bad to worse when he is left out all night. He is dropped in a river, stuck on the front of a lorry, used as a football and snatched by an eagle.
The action of the story switches between Gilbert and Rosie and I couldn't help feeling that neither was quite fully developed. I was also sorry to find Rosie so pusillanimous.
Young readers who have already learned to love the character may be happy to follow her growing up. There's plenty of incident in the story and the illustrations are as good as ever.
We enjoyed the first book in the series rather more.
