This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Stone-faced Captain Jubilee Chase is the best soldier on Avon, a planet in the midst of a rebellion, where the terraforming won’t take, and the mysterious Fury infects soldiers and turns them into mindless killers. Only Lee is immune, and she doesn’t understand why.

Flynn Cormac’s older sister started the rebellion, and it got her executed. Now Flynn’s people are trying to scrape a living in the marshes, and he’s trying to hold on to the fragile cease fire by talking them out of angry retaliation.

But Flynn wants answers about a military installation that’s appeared to the east of his camp. A botched attempt to sweet talk answers out of Jubilee ends with him kidnapping her. The two of them will have to find some common ground if they’re going to end the senseless war and save the planet, and the people they love.

At last, a YA series that doesn’t suffer from second book syndrome! I really loved These Broken Stars and sat down to read This Shattered World with some anticipation. I wasn’t disappointed.

Kaufman and Spooner continue to develop the world they started building in the first instalment of this series, adding to the layers of intrigue surrounding the mysterious LaRoux Industries. Rather than being a somewhat isolated tale of two people, Jubilee and Flynn's love story plays out against the backdrop of a world full of people and problems. The senselessness of the war is clear, but neither side is clearly in the wrong, and the idea that someone could be manipulating the terrible events for some form of gain just makes the story all the more of a page turner.

The characters themselves were great too. Again, there isn't a clear right and wrong in the two sides - and Jubilee and Flynn have to get through this realisation about each other. The way they move towards each other is deliciously tense and slow, making their ultimate 'get together' all the more satisfying.

I'm really excited where this series is going, and will be looking out for the next book appearing in December.

My thanks to the publishers for sending a copy.
