In the second instalment of this series, Private Investigator George Kocharyan has been hired by a well-known local man to track down some missing valuables. Bill Galbraith, a world-famous surgeon at Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital who hosts a popular medical television programme, has had his briefcase stolen by his live-in domestic servant, Aurora. According to Galbraith, this briefcase contains confidential notes concerning an important patient of his at the hospital. George agrees to look into the theft, assuming it will be a relatively easy and straightforward case – little does he know, he's about to enter a world of deceit and dysfunction.

Things begin to spiral out of control quickly for George, especially after he makes contact with Aurora and some disturbing truths about Bill Galbraith and his wife, Kristina, are revealed. He learns that they are holding Aurora's passport and are refusing to hand it over to her, allowing her to leave the country and return to the Philippines where her daughter is seriously ill. George initially cannot understand why this affluent couple are so concerned with keeping their live-in maid in the UK against her will. The situation becomes even more mystifying when a teenage girl's body turns up and George begins receiving threatening visits from two violent goons. How does everything tie together, and will George be able to help Aurora get home before it's too late?

Rodford's latest novel is an entertaining and engaging read. Although it is the second in the George Kocharyan mystery series, it isn't necessary to have read the first novel to enjoy this one. The characters are well-written and feel real. I love the interaction between George and his assistant Sandra, a loyal and sarcastic mother figure who tells him exactly what he needs to hear. There are also some great scenes between George and Detective Inspector Vicky Stubbing, with whom he has an interesting past.

A few moments are a bit too expected – you can guess what will happen on the next few pages based on the initial scene set-up. But overall, it's a thoroughly enjoyable read. The central plot is compelling and littered with humorous moments that help to ease the tension that surrounds the unfolding mystery, and the description of day-to-day life in Cambridge is quite true-to-life.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys an easy and fun mystery novel that doesn't take itself too seriously.
