Fifteen years ago, Casey Carter went to prison for the murder of her fiancée Hunter Raleigh. The evidence seemed indisputable; her fingerprints were on the gun that killed him and her skin tested positive for gunshot residue. She'd been known to be argumentative and passionate, qualities that earned her the nickname Crazy Casey thanks to a tell-all book by an ex-boyfriend. Even her family seemed to suspect her guilt. But now Casey is out of prison and determined to prove her innocence. Who better to help her than Laurie Moran and the Under Suspicion team? After hearing her case, Laurie promises to give her a fair hearing on her TV show and reinvestigate the circumstances of Hunter's death.
Casey's story is a little different to the previous episodes produced by Laurie and her team. The aim of the TV show is to look at cold cases and examine them in the light of the new evidence, with the hope of convicting the guilty party. In this instance, the 'guilty party' had already served time for the crime in question. However, Casey argued that she was still living under suspicion and there was enough media interest in her case to guarantee it a ratings success. As new evidence emerges and suspects interviewed, it soon becomes clear that everyone, even Casey, has secrets that they wish to hide, which makes finding the killer even more challenging.
I've really enjoyed the previous books in this series and The Sleeping Beauty Killer does not disappoint. The two authors work as a perfect partnership, creating a seamless storyline that flows beautifully with plenty of twists, turns and surprise reveals. Naturally, I was kept guessing until the very end of the book.
We also revisit the on/off love story between Laurie and Alex, which has been slowly playing out over the course of the series. This case creates a conflict of interest for the pair and tests their relationship and trust in one another. Laurie is still having trouble moving on since the death of her husband, feeling that somehow she is being disloyal to his memory if she pursues a relationship with Alex.
Fans of Mary Higgins Clark will love this book which sticks to a tried and tested formula that will keep readers glued to the pages in search of answers. I can't wait to see what her next book has in store.
