I frequently meet authors who are struggling to be published by the traditional houses, but when I suggest self-publishing they explain that they don't have the big bucks required to go down that road with Author Solutions or Matador or their like. I then ask if they've considered Kindle and the answer is inevitably that they wouldn't know where to start. I can empathise with that. Despite having used a computer for about thirty years, running most of my life ''and'' a website on line, I'm still nervous when it comes to starting something new. I like someone to hold my hand as I go through it for the first time. That was why I was very interested when ''The Simple Act of Self Publishing With Amazon'' came across my desk. Author Georgianne Landy-Kordis doesn't profess to be a computer expert: she's simply someone who has done this many times and she's giving us the benefit of her experience and without any added chitchat. Advice is simple and to the point and it's not just limited to uploading to Amazon. I liked that she's insistent that you should proofread before you publish - and that you should get someone else to look at the manuscript too. She looks at the financial side and whilst it's aimed at the US market it's something you should consider wherever you are. I was impressed that she even took us through registering the copyright, even down to explaining how to get the © symbol! We'll soon re not just looking at uploading to Kindle ebooks either. There's advice about formatting for a physical book complete with examples from Landy-Kordis's own work. At this point I decided that I would go through the process with her using a script which I work from at conferences. I found the formatting simple - what we're told is sensible, particularly if you are working in Word. What I was dreading was the question of the cover, but Landy-Kordis makes this feel easy. I even went looking at one of the sites she suggests and found the perfect image for a cover - and it was free. After this, uploading the manuscript feels simple and Landy-Kordis takes us through creating a paperback and a Kindle book. I liked that she's quick to point out any snags that you're likely to encounter: the official guides I've met gloss over these points, but they're the ones that make people give up. I reached a point where I could have clicked the final button and the job would have been done. With Landy-Kordis's help and all the appropriate preparation under my belt I could easily have completed the job in under half an hour. I went through the screens with her book at my side and a review complete feeling of this confidence. The tone of the bookis light-hearted and breezy: I felt as though I had a friend with me, guiding me through the process, with tips such as ''it's tiny at the top left'' when you can't find a particular button. There's no jargon, no superfluous chitchat, just solid, sound advice. I'd like to thank the author for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
