Bored with sleeping soundly? Fed up with sweet dreams? Well this is the book for you! Deadly Tales features two nightmare urban legends that you'll pray aren't true.

Jasper the dog meets a sticky end in The Party Animal. But who killed him and why? And are all the partygoers at risk of a similar horrific fate?

Lexi is left home alone in Don't Look Under the Bed. But she's reassured by the presence of Griff, the family dog. So she doesn't worry too much when she hears noises in the middle of the night. Griff is there, licking her hand reassuringly. But what will she find when morning comes?

This book is from Franklin Watts's EDGE range for hard-to-reach readers. So the reading age is about age 9 but the interest level is from age 10-14. So they're quick and easy to read but not patronising, talking about boyfriends and girlfriends and teen socialising, as well as depicting characters left home alone. Both tales are macabre but each has a different feel. The Party Animal is blackly humorous and will appeal to anyone who has wanted to get their own back on someone. It's quite icky, but it did make me laugh. Don't Look Under the Bed is properly, properly scary. I don't know about interest levels - I'm a haggard old 40-something and I'll be checking in cupboards and behind doors for a day or two.

I liked these two stories. They will certainly appeal to older but reluctant readers and also to younger children with strong stomachs and who aren't troubled by thoughts of bogeymen.

Younger children will enjoy Moonwailer by Peter Murray. You might also like Dust 'n' Bones by Chris Mould, a great primer of ghost stories for older children and younger teens.
