The One That Got Away by Melissa Pimentel

When you're American, and planning a wedding, you want that wedding to be in a proper, English castle. Of course you do. It's the only thing that matters. It's far more important than the hassle of shipping in your whole family from the States, forcing your sister to spend a week in a foreign country with her ex or anything else. This is the situation Ruby finds herself in. Her ex, Ethan, is the best man and she's Maid of Honour. It can't be avoided. And it's going to be a disaster.

This book captured my attention from the start for its smart, sassy language. Ruby is a highflier at work in Manhattan but for most of the pages she is 'just' a sister, daughter, friend and ex-girlfriend. Out of the city, out of the country in fact, her status as a New York hotshot means nothing. And even her military-style gym workouts can't prepare her for this fight.

I frequently enjoy books on Britain through the eyes of foreigners, and this was no exception. I found peace in the knowledge I am much less of a Bridezilla than Piper, but it was still fun to read about her plans, crises and everything else. But the story is about a lot more than the wedding. Set half in the past and half in the present, much of it is about Ruby and Ethan's past relationship and present, well, whatever it is they're doing now. Ethan knew Ruby way back when, before New York, before this career, when she was young, free and single (until he came along). And Ruby knew Ethan when he was a simple bartender, not the tech whiz he is now. Because in 10 years, a lot can change. Can two people who used to mean so much to each other return to that feeling, or are some things better left buried in the past?

This book was very easy to read, perfect for a beach or a lazy weekend on a sofa. Ruby is a great lead, and it was fun to see the wedding from her perspective, rather than the usual bride's viewpoint.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending us a copy of this fun read, which is certainly recommended. After all, who doesn't have one that got away?

For a similar, readable style and voice, The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella ticks the box.
