Summary: More mayhem and madness from your favourite witch, Winnie! Not quite as nice as the individual picture books, but still entertaining and fun to have so many illustrations.

Have you met Winnie the Witch yet? I do hope so. She's really quite bonkers, often rather disgusting, and she has a fat, long-suffering cat called Wilbur. She's a bit of a favourite in our house, so we were eager to sit down and read her newest stories together!

This collection brings eight new stories, all illustrated, which see Winnie doing everything from setting up a car boot sale stand, designing her own knickers and taking part in a local football match. The Winnie stories are always fairly accessible, so you don't need to read them in any particular order and you should be able to follow along without any problems even if you've never read any Winnie stories before.

Korky Paul's drawings always brings the stories to life, but I felt in this case that I prefer the individual picture books of Winnie stories. Here the artwork seemed a little bit more slapdash in some of the illustrations here and although some are in full colour and as wonderful as you'd expect, others are only partly coloured, and this left Winnie looking a little bare at times. However, it is entertaining to have illustrations throughout a story collection like this and they help move the stories along, supporting the action all the way.

The stories themselves are lively and fun. Winnie gets into scrapes, as ever, and her magic often makes things worse rather than better. I did get the feeling that she was a little more profane than usual...don't worry, there aren't any real swear words to upset little ones, but she did seem to shout out exclamations such as Knotted noodles, you're blooming right! rather more often than I'm used to! Wilbur is playing his usual side-kick role and is still my favourite - I like his little sighs and rolled eye expressions! There's enough stories here to give you over a week's worth of bedtime reads, and each story is long enough to encourage a nice quite sit down, yet short enough to allow you to read two in a row if you're eeling particularly generous! It would make a nice gift for a Winnie the Witch fan.
