This factual book approaches stories from the bible in a historical way, looking at the lives people would have been living at the time, the sort of homes they had and the reigning monarchs of each era. Working through from the old testament to the new testament it covers a wide range of biblical stories and is illustrated throughout with fascinating, detailed pictures.

There are details about different characters and events through the bible, the locations covered and what those places would have been like during those days. Maps show the different names for places then, areas conquered by different kingdoms, as well as old trade routes. I like that the book covers both the old and new testaments, following from the book of Genesis right through to show at the end the beginnings of Christianity in the Roman empire. The text is clear and easy to understand and written very much in a non-fiction style, so events and stories are discussed dispassionately and in a factual way.

The drawn illustrations are very detailed, some using full page images to show what life would have been like in those times with living and working conditions pictured. There's a lot to see in each illustration and it definitely gives you a feel for the times. I thought it was excellent that when buildings are included in the pictures that there are often cut out sections within them to show the sort of rooms there would have been inside, and the images cover everything from the camps of Abraham travelling through Canaan through to the grand palaces of Solomon.

There's a rather old-fashioned feel to the book - it reminds me of an old children's encyclopaedia I used to have when I was little with the inclusion of photographs, maps and detailed, life-like drawings. As such it doesn't really have a fun feel, it's not something I'd immediately reach for off a shelf on a rainy day, but then once you actually do start to read it's full of interesting illustrations and facts. It struck me more as the sort of book that would be useful in relation to a piece of homework, but I can see that perhaps Sunday School teachers would find it a useful aid in classes and children aged 8 and older from Christian families would enjoy getting a bit more of a feel for what life was like during biblical times.

If you're looking for bible stories for much younger children do take a look at My Look and Point Bible by Christina Goodings and Annabel Hudson.
