Young Nelson Jones was a young and gifted military cadet in the fascist new world order called the 'New Era'. As his experiences led him on a path of conflict and self-discovery, he became a changed man. Picking up 20 months after the events of The Devil's Dragon, Nelson is on an expedition to uncover the mystery of the sungates, when a terrible secret leads to horrifying discoveries for all involved. Meanwhile, the humans and the Aesini fight for their very existence, as Nelson's nemesis, Major Ira Billis, finds a terrifying new ally in a quest to restore the New Era to glory. As Nelson and his friends race against the clock in order to defeat this new threat, they find themselves facing a power beyond imagination…

With two degrees and over 25 years experience in the hotel industry, author Jason F Boggs is now based on the Gold Coast in Australia. A left-handed introvert, he lives with his with SueEllen who patiently endures his imagination, and their two cats – who do not.

I love Sci-Fi – my first memory is of watching Star Wars with my father, and as a genre it's something that has gripped me for years – although I don't read quite as much Sci-Fi as I used too. For a genre so broad, it's understandable that there will be trends and themes that become popular over the years, but in recent times we seem to be in a real wave of dark, gritty, violent sci-fi that entertains but perhaps misses the spark of joy that so turned me on to Science Fiction in the first place.

However, Jason F Boggs skips those clichés in The Dragon's Harvest, and takes the reader on an old fashioned adventure – packed full of action, fun characters, and an interestingly built world. Now it should be said that this is the second book in a trilogy, and whilst it can be read as a stand alone, I imagine reading the first book The Devil's Dragon first would provide some context, additional world building and additional characterisation, which, I imagine, would only increase enjoyment. However, much like turning on the tv and seeing an episode of a 60's Sci-fi tv show on the screen, the reader is able to gain an understanding of events fairly swiftly – and the action moves quickly enough to ensure that the reader is easily picked up and taken along for the ride. A handy Dramatis Personae at the start of the book also ensures that no important information is left out.

Whilst I initially found some of the dialogue a little stilted, this is a well written read – Boggs has a gift for phrasing and really comes up with some well-crafted passages that convey both the joy and horror of space. As book two of a trilogy it's no surprise to hear that there is a cliffhanger at the end of The Dragon's Harvest -and it's a cracking one that I've no doubt will lead well into book three.

A book clearly written with care, love and joy for a genre, The Dragon's Harvest is a readable space romp that I hugely enjoyed. Many thanks for the copy, and for further reading I recommend Invasion by Luke Rhinehart -another fun read that combines clever writing with a love for a genre.
