For all their heroics and lantern jaws, everyone knows that the good guy is never the best thing about a book or film. That accolade goes to the bad guy. They are able to chew the scenery and give the type of larger than life performance a hero could only dream of. One of the best bad guys in children's fiction is not a guy at all, but a pea. An evil pea. At last this pea is given his opportunity to shine, but where there is an Evil Pea, a Supertato cannot be far behind.

The Evil Pea is ruler of all he sees, but frustratingly this is only the inside of the freezer. Whilst the other fruits and vegetables are allowed to frolic around outside, he is imprisoned. However, Evil Pea has his best idea yet – he is only allowed to live in the freezer, then why not make the entire supermarket a freezer? Can Pea's dastardly plan work or will Supertato come up with a surprisingly festive solution to thwart him once more?

The Supertato books have all been fabulous fun. Although the hero is Supertato, without his arch nemesis the books would not be the same. Therefore, it is nice to see the narrative flip in Evil Pea Rules so that we see things from the perspective of the tiny green terror. What you soon notice is although it has Pea on the front, this is still another great Supertato book as both characters have about the same amount of page space.

The best thing about Rules is that it has a couple of very amusing twists in it. The plan to freeze the supermarket works perfectly, but The Evil Pea does not get the reaction from his fellow legumes that he hoped. It's very amusing to see all the vegetables enjoying a snow day. There is also a nice touch towards the end when you realise that this is a Christmas tie in book. Supertato's solution is to dress like a certain jolly present giver. What is a little odd is that there is no reference to the Christmas angle on the cover. I assume this is so the book sells throughout the year, but don't be fooled, this is best read on the run up to December 25th.

Like all the Supertato books, Linnet's illustrations are excellent and you can have some great fun just seeing what all the daft fruit are up to in the background. Within the cannon of the series, this is not quite the best as the Christmas angle does seem to come from nowhere, but for fans of the series it would make a perfect stocking filler.

The other Supertato books are awesome and certainly worth reading: Supertato, Supertato Veggies Assemble and Supertato Run Veggies Run.
