Stone Underpants by Rebecca Lisle and Richard Watson

Poor Pod has a chilly bottom! His leafy clothing is just not cutting it, and he needs to find an alternative. But what can he use to make himself some pants? This is a madcap story that will see Pod wearing everything from stone pants to feather pants, to even, in desperation I suspect, some pants made from spider's webs! Will he ever manage to find something suitable to make his pants from?

Whilst not exactly historically accurate, this is a funny story that introduces the idea of the stone age and, most importantly for our little listeners, talks a lot about bottoms! We see a variety of Pod's attempts at pants, all of which seem to have a fatal flaw (including the stone pants make Pod sink when swimming!) I rather liked the wood pants that were too splintery (I had to wriggle a little uncomfortably in my seat as I read that!) And as a knitter myself, his final solution of using woolly mammoth hair to knit some pants was very pleasing. Indeed, he doesn't stop at pants and the final picture shows his whole family, and the house, decked out in woolly mammoth clothing!

I liked Pod's ingenuity and determination - he is never phased by any of his disastrous pants ideas, and he just carries on to try something else each time. I do like a child with a good work ethic! It's funny to see him trying out his shell pants (too clattery!) and his mud pants (too yucky!) and the book creates lots of giggling and yucky noises! The story is very easy to follow, and each time one pair of pants fails you are wondering what he will come up with next.

The illustrations are done in a cartoon style, extremely bright and lively and Pod himself is cheeky and charming. I liked all the different creatures we see in the background, and I also really liked the picture of Pod's mum who decides to repurpose the feather pants - she turns them into a feather duster, to get rid of the spiders in their cave! There's lots of movement through the illustrations, and they work well with the story, making it a lively read that's fun to share one to one or also with a bigger group of children. Very silly, good for boys and girls, your toddlers will love it!
