Snow has been locked up in a psychiatric hospital ever since she was tried to walk through a mirror when she was very young. She still has the scars to prove it. Institutional life is not great - there are pills, pills, and more pills, and very little freedom. Snow's life is made bearable only by Bale, a fellow patient. But even her relationship with Bale goes wrong. Their first kiss is a disaster, Bale relapses and is kept away from Snow.

Then a new orderly turns up. And everything unravels. Bale is snatched away, through a mirror no less, and Snow follows the strange orderly through a portal in the hopes of rescuing him. She finds herself in a strange, snowbound world full of magical people and ruled by an evil king. And as if that weren't enough, Snow discovers that she is the king's daughter and the only one who can fulfil the prophecy to rid the land of its despot and its everlasting winter...

Fans of the romantic fantasy genre will thoroughly enjoy Stealing Snow. It ticks all the boxes - a heroine in danger and learning to come to terms with her magical powers, a conflict of love interests, good witches, bad witches, monsters, a truly villainous villain and a fantasy world to be built and described as you read. There are plenty of fights, a few kisses and a great deal of thinking about potential kisses. There are taciturn, mysterious love interests and there are flirty, naughty love interests. It's the perfect weekend or holiday read.

The general reader might be less impressed. It's not that there's anything wrong with Stealing Snow. There isn't. But it is a little bit half-baked, a little bit cookie-cutter. Everything is exactly as you would expect it to be and there are no surprises. The plot follows expected lines. The characters do what you expect them to do. The worldbuilding is comprehensive but not exciting. I think this story just misses a little bit of je ne sais quoi to make it stand out from the crowd and reach beyond its target audience.

So - Stealing Snow is either absolutely fabulous or nothing special, depending on what you like to read. Over to you!

If you like romantic fantasy and the motifs of snow and ice appeal to you, you might also enjoy Ice by Sarah Beth Durst.
