Sir Laughalot is a brave knight. He's got all the gear and is desperate to smite a wicked foe, so off he sets on his travels. He meets a fearsome dragon and a whopping great big giant, but each time they end up laughing with one another. Will things change when he tries to rescue the fair damsel from the evil sorceress?

Sir Laughalot is a fun romp. What's not to like about knights and their tales of derring-do? Goodies and baddies do battle, but with laughter the weapon of choice, it's all perfectly appropriate for its young audience. There's a strong sense of rhyme and rhythm throughout as the poem unfolds. It's a fully-rounded story, pitching it at slightly older young readers. The vocabulary is punchy and exciting, and it flows really well.

Sarah Warburton's illustrations are big, bold and cartoony. They suit the silliness of the tale down to the ground. Sir Laughalot is a charming everyman, his foes are comfortably on the right side of scary and monstrous, and the princess is suitably winsome. Everything's very jolly and lighthearted, and there's plenty to enjoy on every page.

Sir Laughalot is a fine addition to any bookshelf. It fits nicely into the tradition of fairy tales, but has a fresh and exciting style that means it's not just a rehash of all that's been before. Warmly recommended.

My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
