If you're thinking of going down the road of self-publishing your book but are unwilling or unable to fund the services offered by some of the leaders in the field then publishing on Kindle is the obvious place to look first. It's a big step though and you want to get it right - not least because what you publish could be out there to haunt you for a very long time. This book comes, as it were, from the horse's mouth and I was expecting explanations, guidance, advice and, well, something which would leave me with the feeling that I could do this successfully. How did it square up?

Well, let's begin with the positive. It was free. If I'd had to pay even a penny I think that I would have felt resentful. It's nothing more than a trip through the process of uploading your book onto the system with accompanying instructions. I didn't spot anything which I thought I would have struggled with had I been uploading. There are occasional examples complete with screenshots, but these are so badly reproduced that they're all but impossible to read. Some of the links to webpages could well have been helpful - but they weren't a great deal of use on my Kindle.

It does presume that you will have existing knowledge. Your manuscript is best uploaded in HTML, but there's no mention of any of the software which would assist you in making the most of your manuscript - and it is out there, some of it for free. Then there's a reference to 'DRM technology' - and a warning that the DRM choice cannot be changed once the book is published, but no explanation or guidance as to the implications. At one point there's a mention of fees not being returnable if you do something naughty (fair enough!) but I didn't spot any mention of fees actually being payable. Most confusing for me though were the different royalty options. You can opt for royalties of 35% or 70% but no explanation of the advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives.

It makes sense to download this book and see what it has to say, but don't rely on it for anything other than a trip through the uploading process once you've pulled everything together.

Of rather more practical use is How to Publish your own eBook by Nik Rawlinson, which does give explanations and advice. We were also quietly impressed by The Book Publishers Toolkit: 10 Practical Pointers for Independent and Self Publishers.
