This cheerful picture book will resonate with parents everywhere. Princess Layla doesn’t want to go to bed. Every single evening she stays awake instead. The cheeky princess ignores every attempt to persuade her that a good night’s sleep is what children, even princesses, need. She skips around the bedroom, plays with her toys without even a yawn in sight. Her exhausted parents have tried everything they can think of...or have they?
Both the text and the illustrations in this book convey the exuberance of a lively child well. Princess Layla is not being deliberately bad she is having fun, curious about what is happening around her and doesn’t want to stop. Everything her exhausted parents try to make her go to sleep fails. From the boring jester, Layla finds his jokes hilarious, to the new soft bed, a perfect trampoline thinks Layla, every attempt to make her go to sleep is doomed. The scenario is such a familiar one that I imagine both parents reading this aloud and young children listening to it will readily identify with the characters giving the book an added appeal.
In the end the totally worn out Queen does what any sensible monarch does and sends for the cavalry...in this case, Grandma. This particular Grandma is not a plump, rosy cheeked Grandma in an apron but an 'I know best' kind of Grandma. This wise lady may well be just person to solve the problem.
Picture books about families and everyday situations are always popular and I think that this one will find its way on to many household bookshelves. Quite possibly bought by Grandmas!
