It's the weekend and I've been indulging myself. There's something about a unicorn which appeals to me and a little bit of research into a book of press-out unicorns, clouds and rainbows seemed like the ideal way to spend a Saturday morning. You get twenty designs in the book and they're all decorated with pink foil: even if you don't want to add any further colouring they're still going to look great, but because the pages are a substantial card you have the opportunity to use crayons, felt tips or even paints to add your own personal touch.

The book's spiral bound so when it's opened it lies flat enough for you to colour the pieces before you remove them from the book. It is easier that way, although you can still decorate after you've pressed a piece out, as I learned when my enthusiasm got the better of me. Pressing them out first is quite useful if you're sharing the models between a few children. I counted eight full-sized (in a manner of speaking) unicorns and a couple of smaller ones.

The back and the front is available to colour, so a child's interest is engaged for quite a while and because the construction is strong and the foil decoration rather attractive the result is going to be pleasing even for those whose handling of a crayon is not yet subtle. The pieces fit together easily and whilst there are no specific instructions they are quite intuitive. The results need to be hung on a string (darning needles remove the small holes quite easily) - they don't stand independently which does restrict the possibilities for creative play.

The unicorns are obviously the main draw of the book (sorry...) but don't dismiss the clouds and rainbows. They can be hung to make a most attractive mobile with the unicorns (I loved the flash of lightning) or used on a length of cord almost like bunting. The book provided a lot of fun both in the colouring and the assembling and I can imagine that a lot of girls will love the creation and the results. I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.

If you're a fan of unicorns and the idea of cards to colour appeals then you might like to try The Colouring Book of Cards and Envelopes: Unicorns and Rainbows by Rebecca Jones.
