When Pom and Pim go out for the day things start off well, but bad luck comes their way. Can they look on the bright side of every situation, even when they feel tripped up time and time again?

This is a minimal word book that it suitably engaging for its target age group. There's repetition, both in the form of phrases and also the idea of both things that are good luck and things that are bad luck, and there’s a sense of excitement as you turn over the pages, trying to see how Pom and Pim will make the best of a bad situation.

The thing I took away from this book is the way optimism can make all the difference. This could have been a dud of a day out. They could have gone home after the first hiccup. But think what a lot of fun they would have missed out on.

The pictures are good, full of details you might not notice the first time round, like the rock waiting to trip you up, and the money waiting to be found. It helps you learn what’s coming next, which is always rather satisfying and a key reason books become favourites and must be read and re-read. The art work is minimal too, and the word Scandinavian came to mind even before I got to the back and discovered he’s Finnish and she’s Swedish and they’re a husband and wife author/illustrator team. It may not to be everyone’s taste, but it works with the rather scant story and you can’t help but cheer for Pom and Pim, even if the pair of them are both a bit funny looking.

I’d like to thank the publishers for sending us this book.

Momo and Snap are not Friends by Airlie Anderson has even fewer words than this one, and is just as perfect for the youngest of the young.
