Anyone who has anything to do with little children will know that you can never have too many pirates. There are pirate costumes, pirate television shows, and here we have another pirate book. In this fun and entertaining tale, we find out how Polly the parrot goes about choosing a pirate as her pet.
I love the way that the usual notion of pirates owning parrots as pets is flipped on its head in this story, and the idea that it is the parrot who is in charge is a great one. I love Polly’s despair at how hopeless all the pirates she sees are. Polly is a wonderful main character with a great story to tell, which adds to the lovely sense of humour within the whole book. It also has a great twist, which makes for a very satisfying ending to the story.
The illustrations match the story well, bold and funny with a wonderfully motley array of ugly characters parading through page after page. There are plenty of nice details within all the pictures and I can really see this book being popular for a pretty broad age range of children because of the popularity of the subject and fun illustrations.
Overall, I think this is a fun, entertaining story which will be popular in libraries and living rooms alike with all the little preschool pirates we have running amok about the country at the moment, I’d definitely recommend it.
If tales of pirates are your thing, then why not try Class Three All At Sea by Julia Jarman and Lynne Chapman?
