Summary: A tie-in with the CBeebies show Waybuloo. There's nothing really to recommend it as a standalone book: it's just an introduction to the characters, with annoying (and difficult to press) sound-producing buttons. Take a look at Let's Play Peeka! instead.

Come to the land of Nara and meet Nok Tok, De Li, Lau Lau and Yojojo. Piplings Come and Play! accompanies the CBeebies show Waybuloo, and is aimed at the very youngest children.

The characters are sweet, big, bold and bright - I don't suppose it would be too unfair to say they're trying to replicate the success of the Teletubbies. Young kids will love 'em. However, as a standalone book, it's more than a little disappointing. Nothing actually happens other than simply introducing the characters. Yes, it's aimed at pre-schoolers, so a detailed plot would be above their head, but the likes of Mr Pusskins - Colours by Sam Lloyd gives you more scope to talk about what's going on. Piplings Come and Play! just feels like an advert for the TV show. I'm not averse to TV tie-ins, but they need to bring something to the table in their own right.

Amongst the board pages are four buttons, which say phrases like De Li loves flowers. Children always love sound books. Parents always hate them, because they'll have heard the same phrases and noises over and over and over and over again. If they add to the atmosphere of an interesting story, or perhaps help with counting along, for example, then you could make a case for them. Here they just feel like a gimmick. The buttons are also a little stiff, and very young fingers will struggle to get a response from them.

I don't suppose any of that will matter to fans of the show: they'll enjoy Piplings Come and Play! as part of the overall package. It should have been much better though.

If you're looking for a Waybuloo book, then Let's Play Peeka! is vastly superior. If you're after another sound book to annoy some parents, take a look at Ten Friendly Frogs by Sally Hobson. For great board books for very young children, The Bear in the Cave by Michael Rosen and Adrian Reynolds and Mr Pusskins - Feelings by Sam Lloyd.
