However, as Kerry soon finds out, life does not always turn out the way one expects. Shorling is full of snooty mums and children who don’t seem to like Kerry’s family very much. When Kerry Tambini moves to Shorling, she has high expectations that she and her family will live there happily forever. Within weeks though, her dreams are shattered after her husband Rob shocks her by an indiscretion that he can hardly remember. This indiscretion turns out to have a devastating consequence leaving Kerry with no option but to ask Rob to move out. This leaves her alone with the children in Shorling and pretty much friendless as she struggles to find anything in common with the snooty mums she meets at the school gate.

Luckily, she has her work as a private piano teacher and her students provide some welcome company – particularly one who is caring and interested in her as well as being very attractive to the eye. He also likes dogs, which is a good thing, as Kerry is persuaded by her children to 'adopt' Buddy, a slightly wayward character who has proved too much for his busy owner. With so much going on, Kerry realises that she is starting to feel settled in Shorling. In fact she’s so busy that she is sure that there is no room for a new man in her life. Will she change her mind though?

This is a very enjoyable book if you are looking for a great bit of escapism. There are many different story lines to lose yourself in and some great characters to enjoy although there are one or two that you are unlikely to warm to. I loved the way that various different relationships developed throughout the book. Kerry is a fabulous central character who is easy to identify with. She has many difficult moments especially the way she is treated by Rob but it's good to come across such a resilient character who has a 'get on with it' approach to her new found circumstances.

This is a book that is both moving and funny. Much of the comedy is associated with the wayward dog, Buddy, whose constant misdemeanours land Kerry in all sorts of trouble and does not win her any popularity points with the residents of Shorling. Don’t be misled though. Although Buddy plays a major part in Kerry’s family’s new way of life, this is more a book about human relationships rather than canine ones. It is a lovely, light read though and has left me wanting to read more from Fiona Gibson.

Why not also take a look at The Great Escape, also by Fiona Gibson.
