Mmm, sausages! Everyone knows that dogs have special hearing when it comes to the discussion of what's for dinner, especially when it comes to sausages. My mum used to hide the worming tablets in sausages as our dog would eat the sausage so fast he wouldn't notice the tablet. Well, most times! Anyway, this book is all about one particular dog's love of sausages, and what happens when he is falsely accused of stealing all of the town's sausages!

Scruff is an appealing little dog, one of those mish-mash rescue dogs with happy eyes and floppy ears. He really, really loves sausages and every night he dreams of sausages, all different sizes and flavours and varieties. He's always to be found hanging around whenever sausages are on the menu, at a barbeque, or a picnic, or outside a restaurant, just in case! So when the town discover that all the sausages have been stolen from the butcher's they immediately suspect poor Scruff. In order to clear his name, Scruff enlists the help of his doggy friends to try and track down the real culprit and clear Scruff's name. It made us laugh that none of the dogs were interested in helping Scruff until he mentions that what they're looking for are stolen sausages, and then suddenly everyone wants to help and has a cunning plan!

Scruff's friends are a pug, an afghan, a dachshund and a poodle. All of the dogs are sweetly drawn. I particularly like the afghan who imagines herself as a bit of a detective, with a deerstalker and pipe! There's plenty of action, with the dogs running through the town (you can follow their route past various places in the town), and then the excitement when they finally do track down the thief and apprehend him! It's interesting that you never see a human face through the story (though plenty of legs appear), but I rather liked this doggy point of view.

The story itself is very easy to follow, and although it is told in prose there is a bit where Scruff lists all of his favourite sausages which rhymes, and that has a lovely rhythm to it and repeats again at the end of the book. There are some great moments of alliteration such as scrumptious, succulent, sizzling sausages! and the story is paced very well, and works well when read aloud. Dog lovers will enjoy the doggish aspects to the story, but it's a good story whether it's dogs or cats (or gerbils) that hold your heart.

At the end of the book there's a reveal of an extra secret sausage stealer, and if you go backwards through the book again you can have fun trying to spot where this other thief appears all through the story! Funny and sweet, this is a great picture book to share - just make sure you have some sausages in the fridge to have for dinner afterwards!

Further reading suggestion: You might also enjoy reading Dogs by Emily Gravett, Fetch by Jane Cabrera or Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion.
